  Nailed It!

On October 31 of 1517, Martin Luther nailed to the door of Castle Church 95 theses. He made invitation in Latin, language of his colleagues at the University of Wittenburg, clerics and scholars of his time, to review and discuss reform of the practice of the sale of indulgences. These indulgences promised deliverance form Purgatory, an unbiblical teaching, where deceased suffered torment, purging their sins before entry to heaven. Luther found the teaching unbiblical, corrupting the gospel of God’s gift of salvation by His grace and substitutionary sacrifice for all mankind.

Latin was the language of the church of Luther's day. That medieval era became known as the Dark Ages, for the light of the scriptures had not been available to the people. Luther translated the Bible from Latin to the common language of the German people. The medieval era of darkness lasted 1260 years, a time identified in biblical prophecies of both Old and New Testaments.

Solus Christus

We are all sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all.                (Heb 10:10)

But Christ became high priest of a greater and more perfect tabernacle, not made with hands....but by his own blood he entered in once into the holy place, having obtained eternal redemption for us.

                                                                       (Heb 9:11,12)

But this man, because He continues forever, has an immortal priesthood.                                      (Heb 7:24)

Sola Scriptura

On trial as a heretic, Luther testified courageously to his love for God's Word  at the Diet of Worms:

Unless I am convinced by the testimony of the Holy Scriptures - or by evident reason –

for I can believe neither pope nor councils alone, as it is clear that they have erred repeatedly and contradicted themselves –

I consider myself convicted by the testimony of Holy Scripture, which is my basis. My conscience is captive to the Word of God. Thus I cannot and will not recant, because acting against one's conscience is neither safe nor sound. Here I Stand. God help me. Amen.

                  Sola Gratia

Therefore, being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, by whom also we have access by faith into this grace wherein we stand and rejoice in the hope of the glory of God.                                                                               (Rom 5:1,2)

For if by one man's offence death reigned, much more they which receive abundance of grace and the gift of righteousness shall reign in life by one, Christ Jesus.           (Rom 5:17)

But God forbid that I should glory save in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, by whom the world is crucified unto me.                                          (Gal 6:14)

Thou art worthy, O Lord, to receive glory and honor and power, for Thou hast created all things, and for thy pleasure they are and were created.   (Rev 4:11)

 95 & 5,

black only

Luther's proposal for academic discussion, the 95 theses, was not brought for discussion and reformation. Instead, the church claimed infallibility and demanded Luther's denial of discovered truth and recanting of his writings. God Himself engineered the complete break which became known as the Protestant Reformation, splitting State-enforced  religion from the individual's personal relationship with one's Maker and the honor of a conscience free toward God. The everlasting gospel is expressed in the five Solas of Reformation teaching.

Here I Stand on 5

"My conscience is captive to the Word of God.

Thus I cannot and will not recant, because acting against one's conscience is neither safe nor sound. Here I Stand. God help me. Amen."

Luther discovered the love of God who honors a freely-given worship and obedience. Luther discovered love cannot thrive outside the gift of freedom. That love gave him courage to stand alone.

Where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty.
